Police Service

Police presence is an important part of a healthy and secure community.

Motion M2014-007

Whereas the municipality of Addington Highlands is policed by the OPP

and Whereas Addington Highlands is, geographically, a very large municipality

and Whereas the OPP detachment is in Kaladar at the extreme southern end of the municipality

and Whereas the OPP has no infrastructure presence in the northern portion of the municipality

and Whereas the OPP presence in the northern portion of the municipality is limited to vehicular patrols

and Whereas vandalism and other nuisance infractions are encouraged when there is no continuing and visible police presence

and Whereas the Denbigh community is a low crime area and does not require highly trained and expensively equipped police officers

and Whereas the Police Services Act permits municipalities with dispersed communities to have differing levels of policing

and Whereas the proposed new costing model for OPP services will put the cost of OPP policing in Addington Highlands at about $1,000,000

and Whereas the northern portion of the municipality will be paying about $400,000 of the total

and Whereas, without a Police Services Board, the municipal council has no means of setting the cost of policing provided by the OPP

and Whereas the current drive-by level of policing is both inadequate and excessively expensive

now therefore be it Resolved

that a committee be struck to report back on the possibility of the municipality using Sections 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 of the Police Services Act to establish levels of policing appropriate to the northern and southern portions of the municipality

and be it further Resolved that the committee report back on the form and level of policing that would be appropriate for the Denbigh community

and be it further Resolved that the committee report back on the possibility of the municipality enacting bylaws whose enforcement would provide some measure of security for the community

and be it further Resolved that the committee make an initial attempt to cost the policing that it recommends.
